Question: What tips would you give me to become an engineer?

Just make sure you enjoy the area you choose to work in and find it interesting. Engineering can be challenging as your finding solutions to problems on a daily basis so if you don’t enjoy it you will find it hard.

What do you like doing? If you like problem-solving, understanding how things work, making things, then you would probably make a good engineer. If your school offers work placements, then try and find an engineering company with which to spend a week or two – you will be able to see what happens day-to-day, and decide if it’s the career for you. Oh yes, you need to be fairly good at maths.

Do some career research/work experience and find out if it’s something you think you would actually enjoy (it’s not for everyone)…
If you think it IS for you then I would say stay on and do A levels (maths and physics is essential, I also did further maths (bonus) and PE and ICT which aren’t really related) and THEN get into a good university doing an engineering degree in a discipline you’re interested in (Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical Engineering etc.).
It really helps if you are maths minded, as there’s a lot of maths involved!
