A fire can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage and even put peoples lives in danger. It’s really important that buildings are fitted out with smoke detectors to ensure that a fire is detected quickly before anything bad can happen. My job is to make sure that a building has smoke detection in all the right places and that an alarm is in place to warn people of a fire.

Different situations require different types of detector and its important to make sure the right one is picked for each area. For example a kitchen needs a detector that won’t go off if you burn the toast but will go off if your chip pan sets on fire.

While fire detection is a major part of my job I also design lighting and other electrical services found in buildings. As a designer I produce the drawings that are used by construction workers on site to build a new building.

Its also part of my job to visit the construction site and inspect the work that is being done to make sure its being installed safely and correctly.
My Typical Day: My day is either spent in the office or at a construction site, or sometimes a mix of the two!
What I'd do with the money

I will donate the money to the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester which runs a variety of STEM workshops for children of all ages.
