At the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) we have to protons circulating at almost the speed of light. The ATLAS detector is at one point on the LHC where protons collide with each other. When the collision happens inside the detector, the detector snaps a picture of the collision so the physicists could study them and analyze them so see if new particles have emerged from this collision.
