It depends entirely what you need to do. For analysing large sets of data, probably C++. For talking to instruments, probably Labview. For general stuff I would start with Basic.
For me all programming languages are the same. If you have no experience what so ever then starting with Visual Basic would probably be the best. Once you master that then all other languages would come easy to you. It is all about the logic, once you start to think as a programmer then it will be almost easy to learn the other languages.
