The things I design for ISIS keep our particle accelerator running which allows users to come in and do science with the neutrons our accelerator produces. It’s the scientific output from ISIS that has the potential to help us in the future.

As an example, scientists have used our neutrons to do research on new hydrogen fuel storage methods for cars, and to investigate how washing powders can perform better at lower temperatures, both of which will help contribute to a more sustainable environment!

Even this it is not my own invention but the World wide web was actually created at CERN where I am currently working and it is DEEPLY affecting people’s day to day life. Can you imagine your life without the web??? 😉

Accelerator research can help in the development of more cancer treatments (using beams of protons to destroy cancer tumours). The beams require precise control and monitoring, which is a area I study.
